Fall or Spring or None of the Above: KSB to Debate Referendum Call

May 23, 2026 8:30a

(WGTD)---The discussion is expected to continue at Tuesday night's Kenosha School Board meeting on whether to hold another referendum this November.

Without gaining voters' approval to exceed state-mandated levy limits, the district in the next school year, without any additional cuts, is projecting a $10 million deficit. And that's without any salary increases figured in.

The recently-rejected K-though-12 state aid/property tax relief bill in Madison would've eased the financial bind without completely erasing it.

At Tuesday night's meeting, the board is expected to debate the advantages and disadvantage of holding a referendum in November--or waiting until the spring. If the board goes with November, then the administration is recommending that the board consider potential both short and long-term cuts at a meeting next month.

Also Tuesday night, the board is expected to discuss a proposal to ask the municipalities that are responsible for sending out property tax bills each December to sub-categorize the portion of each bill that's listed to support the school district. About 9% of Kenosha Unified's tax levy goes to fund voucher schools and independent charters. KUSD has no control over those allocations.
