Father Says Jacob Blake Paralyzed As Kenosha Faces Aftermath Of Protests

Aug 25 12:05pm

(WPR/AP)---The father of Jacob Blake, a Black man who was shot in the back by police Sunday in Kenosha, Wisconsin, said his son was left paralyzed from the waist down.

The news follows a second night of unrest in Kenosha and elsewhere in the state, with protests extending well into the early hours of the morning.

Blake’s father told The Chicago Sun-Times that he was told his son was shot eight times during the Sunday evening confrontation with police, which was captured on cellphone video and led to two nights of unrest.

The father, who is also named Jacob Blake, said he was driving from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Kenosha to be with his son. He said his son has "eight holes" in his body and that doctors don’t know if the paralysis will be permanent.

In Kenosha, police again fired tear gas at hundreds of protesters who defied a curfew, threw bottles and shot fireworks at law enforcement guarding the courthouse. Police fired the tear gas about 30 minutes after an 8 p.m. curfew took effect, but many protesters remained out hours later.

The Kenosha News reported that buildings and vehicles were set ablaze across the city through the night.

Hundreds also took to the streets in downtown Madison to protest the shooting. Police there also deployed tear gas and pepper spray on crowds, and reported arresting six people after some protesters damaged and looted businesses, and set dumpster fires.
