July 1, 2024 7:45a

From WGTD News:

Gov. Evers has ordered flags to fly at half-staff in honor of Racine County Executive Jonathan Delagrave, who apparently suffered a fatal heart attack while jogging early Friday morning. In a statement, Evers called Delagrave an exceptional leader who worked tirelessly over many years to leave a lasting impact on the county. Delagrave was in his third term as county executive. He previously led the county’s human services department. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

A near-drowning occurred off of Simons Island in Kenosha Sunday evening. Police said a woman was caught up in strong currents near the newly-reopened Simmons Island beach house. Family members were able to rescue her, and she was taken to the hospital where she currently is in stable condition. The incident occurred at a time when a beach warning was in effect for high waves and dangerous currents. That warning has since expired.

Kenosha’s Lake Michigan beaches aren’t staffed with lifeguards, unlike Racine’s two major beaches. Racine just announced that it’s expanding lifeguard hours at Zoo Beach from four to seven days. Hours are from ten until 5:30. The adjacent North Beach already was guarded full-time. The city says its lifeguard program is fully-staffed with 17 full-time and nine part-time lifeguards. The seven-day-a-week protection at both beaches will be in effect at least through the end of this month.

Flight for Life was dispatched to Kenosha twice Sunday for accidents involving bicyclists. The first one occurred just before noon in the 5100 block of Sheridan Rd. The bicyclist—who suffered serious injuries—was struck by a hit and run driver. Police said Monday they’re still looking for the driver. Sunday evening on Sheridan Rd. near Carthage College…a bicyclist ran over some debris in the road, fell and struck his head on the pavement. He’s in stable condition.
