(WGTD)---Veterans Outreach of Wisconsin is expanding its 'tiny homes' enclave for veterans on Yout St. in Racine.
The Racine Planning Heritage and Design Commission recommended approval Monday of a conditional use amendment that would allow the group to build nine more transitional-living homes on top of the 15 that already exist. Each home has a bed, a small kitchen, a storage area and a TV. A community center offers a recreation area, a full-sized kitchen, bathrooms and showers.
Veterans Outreach Deputy Director Kerry Milkie says the non-profit has funding in hand to build four homes at $35,000 apiece. Residents are already lined up. Labor is being donated by Walsh Construction.
Veterans Outreach also operates a food pantry that's located across the street. Milkie says it serves 850 veterans a month. Food donations can be dropped off around the clock--the pantry has an outdoor collection bin.
