(WGTD)---Special prosecutors have been appointed to handle a possible retrial of Mark Jensen, the Pleasant Prairie man who was twice convicted of using antifreeze and sleeping pills to fatally poison his wife in 1998.
If a new trial is ordered—and that’s a big if—former Kenosha County District Attorney Robert Jambois would lead the prosecution team for the third time.
He’d be assisted by former Kenosha County Deputy District Attorney Carli McNeill. She’s familiar to voters in that she ran for district attorney two years ago but lost to the current DA, Xavier Solis. McNeill currently serves as a prosecutor in Rock County.
The prosecution team would be rounded out by Jambois’ wife, Beverly, who would serve without pay in a voluntary position that’s possible under state statutes.
Jensen’s current attorney is seeking a new trial due to alleged ineffective counsel. He’s also alleging that exculpatory evidence was improperly excluded from Jensen’s last trial.
The case has bounced around the court system for years and has drawn national interest.
A key piece of evidence is the so-called letter from the grave, written by Jensen’s wife Julie, and sent to a neighbor, to be opened only upon her death. In the letter, Julie Jensen pointed the finger at her husband.
