(WGTD)---A new use has been found for a long-vacant grocery store in Kenosha's Uptown neighborhood. And a Kenosha charter school has found a permanent home.
KTEC Schools of Innovation has purchased the former Pick 'n Save building for $5 million, according to a news release from the school.
KTEC currently operates out of leased space that's adjacent to St. Mary's Catholic Church on 39th Ave.
According to the release, the 56,000 sq. ft. store will be transformed into a school with state-of-the-art classrooms, a gym and hands-on technical education spaces for instruction in subject matters that will include welding, manufacturing, and construction.
The Pick 'n' Save store closed in 2017.
KTEC describes itself as a tuition-free school, chartered under the auspices of the University of Wisconsin, that provides a STEM-focused college and career pathway. The school currently has 320 4K-12 students, according to KTEC Executive Director Angela Andersson. She says the new building will allow the school to grow to 650 students.
When it opens in in fall of 2026, KTEC won't be the only STEM school in the neighborhood. Kenosha Unified's LakeView Technology Academy opened in a new building earlier this year in the Kenosha Innovation Neighborhood. To the south, KUSD operates LakeView K-8 Academy in the former Lincoln Middle School building. The K-8 is described as a feeder school for LakeView.
