(WGTD)---A former Racine alderman who currently serves as the city's transit director is seeking his party's nomination in the 21st State Senate district.
Democrat Trevor Jung launched his campaign Tuesday morning on Racine's lakefront with a crowd of supporters standing behind him.
The heavily Republican 21st has been held by Van Wanggaard since 2010, but redistricting has made it an even split by combining the north half of Racine and Wind Point, Caledonia, North Bay and Raymond with southwestern Milwaukee County, including Franklin, Greendale, Hales Corners and parts of Greenfield and Milwaukee.
In his campaign announcement, Jung called for changes to benefit public education and working families. "No more scraps from Madison. No more being told to wait. No more choosing anger over solutions. No more exclusions.. No more excuses and no more making do with less," Jung said. "Instead, funding for our public schools. Investing in our neighborhoods and affordability for our families."
In a statement, Wanggaard, who says he'll make a decision on whether to run for re-election later this year, said Jung harbors "crazy liberal ideas" in line with a "Madison/California liberal."
Jung's response: "I respectfully disagree and I think that Sen. Wanggaard is a decent man and has a good family. We're going to run a different kind of campaign. And I think people are sick of the personal insults."
Jung's comments Tuesday were preceded by remarks from former Racine Police Chief Art Howell, Butter Buds Community Affairs Officer Tom Buhler and Jung's fiancee, "Farmer Wants a Wife" reality TV star Grace Girard who grew up in Kenosha.
