Kenosha---Caravans of candidates are crisscrossing the state this weekend in efforts to cover as much ground as possible before Tuesday's election.
Mars Cheese Castle off of I-94 closed off its barroom to regular Saturday afternoon traffic to make way for a get-out-the-vote rally that featured Gov. Walker, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and 1st District Congressional candidate Bryan Steil. About 75 supporters filled the room.
Paul Ryan, the man Steil hopes to follow in Congress, also spoke. State Rep. Samantha Kerkman attended the half-hour-long rally but didn't speak.
Without mentioning President Trump, the House Speaker used the Cheese Castle as a good example of how businesses have benefited from Republican administration policies, noting that the businesses has almost doubled its number of employees. "This is a story of our economy....of a great family business giving great jobs to people," Ryan said.
Ryan got a laugh when he joked that the company specializes in selling cheese at discounts to Wisconsinites and marking it up for Illinois residents when they drive up.
When it was his turn to speak, Gov. Walker recounted Wisconsin's economic successes and also touched on another hot topic of the campaign, health care and specifically protecting people with pre-existing conditions. "We will always cover people with pre-existing conditions in the state of Wisconsin," he said. Walker said he supports state legislation to do just that if the Affordable Health Care Act and its protections disappear. Walker is among those who have urged that the Act be repealed.
The top of the Democratic Party ticket is to rally in Racine Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at the party's campaign office at 507 6th St. Then at 3 p.m., the group will appear in Kenosha at UAW Local 72 headquarters.
Ryan and Steil will take one last kick at the cat Monday in Mt. Pleasant. They're to speak at 1:30 at a party field office at 6021 Durand Ave.
