House Fire Interrupts Candidate's Campaign

(WGTD)---It's been a busy spring for Kenny Harper.

First, Harper launched a campaign to capture the Kenosha city council seat currently held by the retiring Dan Prozanski.

Now, Harper and his family are trying to recover from a devastating house fire.

Early Sunday morning on the 9th, while Harper was catching up with things at work, a fire broke out just a few feet from where his wife was napping in a bedroom.

She and the couple's three children got out safely. But the brick duplex in the 6200 blk. of 72nd St. sustained heavy damage. While the cause is under investigation, Harper believes the origin was electrical in nature.

Harper and his family have been staying in a motel while they look for more of a permanent home. Harper says he's grateful for the community's response in his family's time of need. "The community has completely wrapped their arms around us and has been a huge support," he said. "All of the phone calls, the donations."

The Harper's have renter's insurance--evidence that he took to heart his own advice that he regularly gives to clients who rent. "I always talk to people about the importance of having it because you never know when you need it," he said.

Harper sells insurance as part of his company, Harper Tax and Financial Literacy.

Harper is known for his volunteer work in the community. He currently sits on the board of directors of the Kenosha/Racine Urban League.

On the phone, Harper sounded upbeat. "It's been a process but we're doing very well."

Harper is running for council against Joel Trudell.
