(WGTD)---The City of Whitewater Police says their investigation is nearing its completion of 19-year-old William Schultz. Schultz is accused of punching a woman during an altercation and then bragging about the encounter online. The incident drew massive social media traction after a Change.org petition garnered over 10,000 signatures seeking his removal from the men's basketball team and his suspension from the University.

The incident occurred last week outside of “Pumpers and Mitchells,” a popular bar in Whitewater. 19-year-old William Schultz approached a 20-year-old female and allegedly punched her in the face outside of the bar. The 20-year-old was with her friend, a bartender. Reports of a second woman being attacked are unconfirmed. It is unknown if the alleged victim and Schultz knew each other. WGTD spoke with Chief Aaron Raap of the City of Whitewater Police.

Police interviewed the victim 15 hours after the initial altercation and took photos of the bruising and swelling. Schultz has been cooperative with authorities.

Police say they are debating whether or not they will refer Schultz to the District Attorney for a misdemeanor charge or issue a citation with a heavy fine for the incident. Schultz has had no prior contact with City of Whitewater Police. Schultz was given a Disorderly Conduct citation by the University of Whitewater police last year.

A source tells WGTD that Schultz has been removed from the team although it remains unclear if that is indefinite. Schultz’s page on the Whitewater Men’s Basketball website has been taken down.

Nearly half a dozen women have come forward claiming that Schultz harassed or sexually assaulted them. It is unknown how many formal complaints the University received regarding Schultz.

Attempts to reach the alleged victim and UW-Whitewater for follow up were not returned.
