"It's For You": Kenosha County to Test Emergency Alert Systems Saturday

Thousands of phones in Kenosha County will buzz and sound off simultaneously Saturday morning around 10:30.

The Sheriff's Dept. Emergency Management office will be testing a pair of alert systems.

The Integrated Public Alert Wireless System, or IPAWS for short, reaches all cell phones that are within range of cell phone towers in Kenosha County. The system is activated only in the most dire of emergencies.

The second system that'll be tested is called "AlertSense."

In this system, emergency notifications are dependent on cell phone and landline users signing up by going to the Sheriff's Dept. website. About 12,000 people are currently enrolled, according to Emergency Management Director Lt. Horace Staples.

This notification system is used for a variety of lesser emergencies.
