Kenosha City Council Member Resigns, Asks for Prayers, Following Diagnosis

Sept. 15, 2025 10p

(WGTD)---A sad and sober ending to Monday night’s regularly-scheduled meeting of the Kenosha City Council.

It came when the presiding officer—Mayor Dave Bogdala—called upon 4th District Alderperson Holly Kangas to speak. "In full transparency with this council and with the constituents of District 4, I'd like to share some recent events in my life. I'm choosing to do this now because I don't want anyone else to tell my story. I want to tell my own story," she said.

Kangas then tearfully announced she's been diagnosed with a terminal illness and that her resignation would take effect immediately.

Corticobasal Degeneration is a form of Parkinson's Disease that has no cure. Symptoms for Kangas began about eight months ago with minor memory loss, bouts of dizziness, stiffness and shaking. After extensive testing, Kangas said she received the diagnosis three weeks ago.

"My goal now is to spend lots of time with family and friends and live in the moment every single day," she said.  "Being elected and sitting in this chair has been a blessing. I've enjoyed it immensely and will miss it terribly."

Kangas has represented the north side district since 2018.

Mayor Bogdala thanked Kangas for her service, and said that she can count on his office and the council for support.
