Kenosha County Food Bank Moves Forward in 2020

Dec. 23, 2020 5p

(WGTD)---Building a reliable backbone for seven Kenosha area food pantries is the goal of a new non-profit that formally launched this past year. The Kenosha County Food Bank aims to serve primarily as a go-between for the pantries, and the region’s large food distributors, according to one of the organizers, Amy Greil of UW-Extension.

Speaking on a recent edition of Community Matters, Greil talked about how the new non-profit plans to position itself to accept large donations of food from the regional distributors, pick them up, store the goods locally then distribute the items in a timely manner to the local pantries. The distributors prefer to work with larger organizations that work to support individual pantries, she said.

Thanks to corporate donations and a grant from the Hunger Relief Federation, the Kenosha County Food Bank has already secured a refrigerated box truck for pickups and storage.

The goal now is to find a brick-and-mortar warehouse. A fundraising campaign is expected to be launched next year.

The organization is patterned after the Racine County Food Bank.

Even when it becomes fully functional, the Kenosha County Food Bank doesn’t expect to be able to fully supplant the need for food drives and individual pantry donations.
