Kenosha County has just come up with $10,000 for a motel voucher program for homeless people. The Emergency Motel Voucher Assistance program provides a safety net for people who are in need of temporary shelter.
But, an organization that’s taken a strong interest in the homeless issue, suggests that a much more comprehensive approach is needed. It’s called “housing first.”
Homelessness in Southeastern Wisconsin was discussed on Community Matters hosted this weekend by Len Iaqunita. Iaqunita welcomed guests from CUSH (Congregations United to Serve Humanity); Reverend Kathy Gloff, the president of CUSH, Rev. Dr. Susan Patterson-Sumwalt, and Karen Kempinen, a Member of the CUSH Unsheltered Homeless Task Force. (Pictured Above)
Reverend Kathy Gloff, said that she wants more good ideas to be funded. "Citizens contacting their state represnatives, because now is the time the budget is being put togrther for our state, (should) make sure that money is allocated to support the good ideas in the Wisconsin Inter-agency Council on homelessness report."
She added that the “housing first” philosophy provides stability for people whose lives are very unstable.
