(WGTD)---An editor has resigned from the Kenosha News over what he and others viewed as an inflammatory headline that higher-echelon management at least at first refused to change.
The headline had been placed over an online sidebar story about one of the last speakers at Saturday's rally for Jacob Blake.
The man, who wasn't identified, advocated for a violent response to the police shooting of Blake six days earlier. The man's comments ran contrary to the message delivered by all of the other speakers, including Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes and Tim Mahone, a Kenosha native who heads up the Mahone Foundation.
While the paper reported the comments of those speakers in-depth, it also highlighted the incendiary remarks in the sidebar story which included a link to a video.
Daniel J. Thompson, the paper's digital editor, resigned in protest, unsuccessfully arguing that the headline was misleading and unnecessarily inflammatory.
On his Facebook page, Thompson said he was the only full-time Black member of the newsroom.
He emphasized that he has no squabbles with any of his former co-workers other than top management.
At some point after Thompson handed in his resignation Saturday, the objectionable headline was changed, although the story remained.
The episode drew hundreds of comments on the paper's Facebook page.
