Kenosha Panel Recommends Rejection of Cornerstone Bid

Updated 4-29

(WGTD)----A Kenosha City Council committee voted unanimously Monday night against handing a $1.5 million road construction contract to a firm that has a history of failing to complete work on time.

Cornerstone Pavers was the lowest of two bidders for the second phase of the 60th St. reconstruction project.

In voting to reject the bid, members of the Public Works Committee cited the firm's checkered past.

The panel's recommendation now goes to the full council. It's not clear whether the council, under the circumstances, would have the power to approve the second bid, even though it was $19,000 higher, Public Works Dept. Dir. Shelly Billingsley said after the meeting.

At the meeting itself, Billingsley and City Administrator Ed St. Peter said the project would have to be rebid, causing a one or two month delay.

No one from Cornerstone appeared to be on hand for the committee vote Monday night.

Proposals from Caledonia-based Cornerstone were recently rejected by the Racine City Council for work in that city
