Kenosha---Substitute teachers who work for Kenosha Unified are some of the highest paid in the state. Even so, the district still has a hard time finding enough of them.
At a work session Thursday night, the school board came up with a plan to give high-performing subs a bonus for the days they work. The proposal will retroactively give subs who covered more than 160 days this school year a $300 bonus. An extra one-hundred dollars will be given to subs who worked more than 90 days but less than 160.
The concept was endorsed by Superintendent Sue Savaglio-Jarvis. She said subs are needed to fill absences that are caused by a variety of reasons, not just illness.
The money for the incentive plan will come from a pot of unallocated funds that total about $400,000. Most of the money will be divided among full-time employees, amounting to about $150 per head. The bonus would come on top of a 1.5% salary increase that was given as a one-time stipend to full-time staff earlier this year.
The board is expected to finalize both plans in a vote that’s been scheduled for next month.
The expectation is that the substitute teacher incentive plan will continue into future budget years.
