Lights Back On For Most Who Lost Power in Ice Storm

Feb. 23, 2023 noon; Updated 8:30p

(WGTD)---We Energies said Thursday night that nearly 95% of its customers who lost power in Wednesday's ice storm and its aftermath are now back on the grid.

Spokesman Brendan Conway says that the remaining customers will have their power returned by noon Friday.

That means that crews will be working through the night for a second night in a row. "Our army of crews and specialized workers battled icy and dangerous conditions to get customers' power back," said Conway in an email to WGTD. "We are working through the night and will get every customer back on by Friday afternoon," he said.

Conway said the company appreciates customers' patience and "the many people who have shared kind words and gestures to our hard-working employees."

It wasn't clear just how many customers lost power because of the ice. At one point early Wednesday morning, it appeared that a-third of We Energies' customers in Racine County were without power.

Thousands of other customers served by Madison-based Alliant Energy in far western Kenosha County and in Walworth County also lost power.
