Local Democrats, Republicans, Celebrate/Bemoan Election Results

Wisconsin's ten electoral votes put Donald Trump over the top early Wednesday morning.

Despite pre-election polls that suggested a different outcome, Wisconsin went for Trump by three percentage points.

Locally, majorities in all three of the counties in WGTD’s primary listening area—Kenosha, Racine and Walworth—went with the flow. But Trump’s margin of victory in Kenosha County was slim—just 255 votes out of over 77-thousand ballots cast.

A quick look at the numbers revealed turnouts that were lower from four years ago. And many more voters either voted for third party candidates or skipped the presidential race altogether. In Kenosha County for instance, twice as many votes were cast for minor party or write-in candidates than four years ago.

In Racine County Tuesday night, Republicans celebrated at Charcoal Grill. County party chair Lisa Bell said the strength of Trump’s support was surprising.

Racine Democrats, meanwhile, gathered at Infusino’s Banquet Hall. State Rep. Corey Mason explained the upset in part by saying that many people clearly underestimated the intensity of the country’s economic anxiety.
