Mental Illness, Gun, Combine for Near Tragedy

Aug. 30, 2024 1:30p

(WGTD)---A close call for a woman in Caledonia the other night.

A 22-year-old man with autism is accused of firing a shotgun into a motel room, narrowly missing the woman who had befriended him earlier in the evening.

According to a criminal complaint, the defendant had lived in the transient motel on Douglas Ave. for two years, and had a habit of pacing in the area late at night.

Late Wednesday night, a woman who also stays at the motel offered to join him.

At one point, the man glanced at the woman’s phone, and became angry after seeing a message which he had misinterpreted.

The man went back to his room, retrieved a shotgun and raised the barrel at her.

She ran back into her room, and laid down on the bathroom floor—a move that may have saved her life as the man fired a shot into the door.

Police responded and the man readily surrendered.

The complaint says he told investigators that he’s had homicidal thoughts about killing family members.

In court, a bond was set at $25,000 and he was ordered to undergo a competency evaluation.

A hearing is scheduled for late next month.
