Misconceptions Corrected Over Protest Response; Daily Briefings Promised

(WGTD)---Kenosha Mayor John Antaramian corrected some misconceptions and issued an apology during a joint news conference with other officials at the Public Safety Building Wednesday.

For one thing, Antaramian said Gov. Evers has been fully cooperative in supplying National Guard personnel to quell the civil unrest that has resulted from the Jacob Blake police shooting. Antaramian indirectly acknowledged that city officials underestimated the problem, but that the governor has been responsive to requests from the city. "They've been upping the numbers every day that we've asked for help," he said.

It's also a fallacy to believe that the federal government hasn't been supporting Kenosha all along. Agents from the FBI, Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and U.S. Marshals Service have been here almost from the beginning, he said.

In addition to guardsmen and federal agents, several hundred law enforcement officers have been brought in from around the state, said Kenosha County Sheriff Dave Beth.

Antaramian also said that he'll take part of the blame for a dearth of information on what officials have been doing in response to the violence. Several city council members criticized the administration Tuesday for leaving them in the dark.

The officials who participated in Wednesday's news conference promised daily updates.
