NBA in Racine?; New KUSD Transgender Proposals; Fatal near Twin Lakes

Racine---Work is underway to explore the feasibility of hosting a new NBA developmental team that would be affiliated with the Milwaukee Bucks, according to a report in the Journal Times. Racine is one of several cities in Wisconsin that reportedly are under consideration. While saying that options are being explored, Mayor Dickert wouldn't say whether he's looking to build a new arena. Any proposal from Racine, he indicated, would be bolstered by the city's proximity to Milwaukee and its connections with Caron Butler, a Racine native and 14-year NBA veteran who retains close ties to his home town. The Bucks are expected to name a host city within the next two months, and want to have the team up and running for the 2017-2018 season.

Kenosha---A proposed policy on bathroom use by transgender KUSD students stops short of automatically allowing them to use the restroom of their choice. The new policy, and others relating to transgender discrimination, are expected to be discussed Tuesday night by a school board committee. Under one proposal, any student who wants to use a restroom or locker room that corresponds to the student's gender identity rather than his or her biological sex at birth first needs to contact the building principal or a school counselor. Such requests will be decided on a case-by-case basis, with several goals in mind, including "facilitating the student's access to the District's physical education curriculum" and "ensuring adequate student privacy and safety." The Tuesday evening meeting begins at 6:30.

Town of Randall---A motorcyclist was killed Saturday evening when his bike left the road and crashed into a utility pole On Highway 'F'. The victim was identified as a 68 year-old Twin Lakes resident, John Leisen. The accident occurred on a curve. According to a news release from the Kenosha County Sheriff's Dept., Leisen was operating a custom 1965 Harley and wasn't wearing a helmet. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Racine---No one was injured in an early-morning fire in a duplex that apparently was started by careless use of smoking materials. According to a release from the fire department, the tenant in the upper apartment at 1901 Geneva St. discovered the fire at 1:15 Sunday morning and alerted his downstairs neighbors. Firefighters confined the blaze to the upper unit. The Red Cross was called in to help the displaced occupants. Damage was estimated at $20,000.
