New Charter School Being Proposed for Kenosha Unified

(WGTD)---A new public charter school with a “Afrocentric” emphasis is being proposed for the Kenosha Unified School District.

Organizers of the “Sankofa Community Academy” have scheduled a public meeting for Tuesday evening at Southwest Library in an effort to build support. It’ll begin at six.

According to a brochure put out by the proposed school, Sankofa would strive to create an atmosphere designed to enhance learning that would be much more diverse in thinking than a traditional public school.

A cornerstone belief is that a systematic racial bias exists in public education in Wisconsin that contributes to the achievement gap and a high incarceration rate among black males.

Sankofa argues that the status quo could be reversed by implementing a model that doesn’t begin and end with European history and culture, promotes family and community engagement, fosters positive social and cultural identity development, emphasizes respectful relationships and establishes high standards and expectations.

The effort is led by Andrea Bell-Meyers, who has an array of educational-related experiences in the area. She’s one of eleven board members.
