(WGTD/WPR)---Wisconsin has set a new single-day record for COVID-19 deaths.
The latest data from the state Department of Health Services reported 120 new deaths on Tuesday. The previous single-day record was 107 deaths on Dec. 1.
Locally, six new deaths were reported in Kenosha County, bringing the total to 202. Three more were added in Racine County for a total of 239 deaths. Walworth County has 82, one more than the day before.
In regard to testing, the line was long Tuesday at the former Kenosha Fire Dept. Station 3, a testing site that's hosted by Modern Apothecary with help from the fire department and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. National Guard testing in Kenosha County has been suspended until local officials find a suitable, drive-thru, indoor site.
Meanwhile, other options are available to fill the gap.
Gov. Tony Evers and DHS Secretary Andrea Palm announced a new at-home COVID-19 testing program Tuesday. The state has contracted Vault Medical Services to send saliva collection kits to Wisconsin residents regardless of whether they have symptoms. The state will pay for the new testing service and residents can order a collection kit on the DHS website.
Palm said the at-home collection is just as accurate as a nasal swab at a clinic or community testing site.
"We are excited to continue to diversify our options and expand access to testing in Wisconsin," Palm said. "This is more important than ever. In recent weeks we've seen a decrease in the number of people seeking COVID-19 tests."
The number of new cases continues to fall from its peak in early November. The state reported 2,403 cases on Tuesday. Locally, 108 new cases were reported in Kenosha County, 139 in Racine County and 52 in Walworth County.
