(WGTD)----A pair of teenaged-girls had to be rescued from the waters off of North Beach in Racine Monday evening after they apparently were caught in an undertow that claimed two lives in incidents that occurred on Saturday.
According to a news release from the Racine County Sheriff's Dept., responding deputies observed what appeared to be a strong current pulling the girls into deeper water and into the rocks surrounding North Pier.
Both were rescued. One girl suffered cuts and scratches while the second received medical attention at the scene, and was ultimately flown to Children's Hospital in Milwaukee.
Just two days earlier, 17-year-old Yaadwinder Singh of Franklin was rescued about 200 yards off of North Beach. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died early Monday morning.
Around the same time, 10-year-old Naomi Figuereo Colon of Racine got in trouble further north at Zoo Beach and disappeared under water. Her body was located about 25 minutes after the 911 calls were received by dispatch. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Racine County Sheriff's Dept. Sgt. Michael Luell tells WGTD that neither the girl, or other children she'd been with, or the lone adult in her group, knew how to swim. It wasn't immediately clear who else was around.
Waves along the shoreline Saturday evening were 2-4 ft. The supervisor in charge of the sheriff's dept. water patrol boat described the currents that afternoon and evening as "concerning," Luell said.
North Beach is staffed with lifeguards through 6 p.m. Zoo Beach has no such protection.
