Panel Seeks Input in Designing Plan to Improve Conditions in Racine for African-Americans

(WGTD)---A task force has been formed in Racine with one goal in mind: To reverse the city’s consistent ranking of being one of the worst places to live for African-Americans.

The Racine County Equity Task Force hopes to make measurable progress in the statistical analysis that’s published on an annual basis.

Several task force members spoke on a recent edition of Community Matters. "Part of what we decided to do as a task force is to not just talk about it but put some actionable items behind it," said Stacia Thompson.

The task force will be hosting a town hall Saturday, March 26th from 10 until noon at Greater Mt. Eagle Baptist Church in Racine.

Before then, residents are being asked to fill out a survey that’ll have a bearing on the emphasis of the session.

Task force members say they eventually want to come up with a plan to prioritize and strategically address Racine’s shortcomings.

Racine scores low for African-Americans in the areas of educational attainment, income, incarceration and home ownership rates and juvenile justice.

Task Force member Melvin Hargrove says a key to the effort will be to come up with a realistic action plan to move the needle. "We can't solve all of the world's problems," Hargrove said.

Another task force member who spoke on Community Matters was Nicole McDowell, who serves as Racine Unified's Dir. for Engagement and Equity.
