Project Chronicles Kenosha History Through Interview Series

Oct. 27, 2025 10:15a

(WGTD)---As Kenosha celebrates its 175th anniversary as a city, the work continues to expand a collection of oral histories.

Former Kenosha News editor Carl Frederick spearheads the project that began several years ago out of an interest to document the city’s lost industries.

Over 170 interviews have been recorded with Kenoshans of all walks of life.

The videos are produced with the help of Kenosha Community Media. They take place in the non-profit’s studio at the Southwest Library.

Speaking on a recent edition of WGTD’s Morning Show, Frederick said most of those who appear have never before been interviewed. Before the camera starts rolling, the process begins with a pre-interview. "That way they're in front of a camera but they don't have to worry about any surprises (over) what the next question is going to be because they've already gone through a conversation or a chat so they feel much more...comfortable when we actually record it," he said.

The quickest way to access the Kenosha Voices segments is to go to YouTube and search ‘Kenosha History Center.’

The project is conducted under the auspices of the Kenosha Historical Society, which runs the Kenosha History Center and the adjacent Southport Lighthouse station.

Frederick said anyone interested in being interviewed should call the History Center.
