Racine County Board Committee Kills Waterford Racism Resolution

June 12, 2025 10:20a

(WGTD)---A Racine County Board committee voted this week to table a resolution that condemned the racist actions of some people at a track meet last month at Waterford High School.

A series of racial incidents led to one of the participating schools—Milwaukee’s Rufus King—to leave the event before the competition was over.

A resolution that was introduced by a couple of county board supervisors put the county board on record for affirming its commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, equitable and just county for everyone. It also called on the offenders in the Waterfor incident to be held accountable.

Members of the Executive Committee who voted to table did so for a variety of reasons. Some said they had only recently seen a school district report on the matter, even though it had been released two weeks ago. Others said it unfairly put the high school in a bad light because several adults and non-students were identified as engaging in inappropriate behavior. Still others said the county board shouldn’t criticize other units of government.

Supervisor Robert Miller, while condemning the incident, said passage of a resolution wouldn’t solve anything. "Besides doing a thorough investigation, the Waterford Union School District has taken steps and has pledged to take further steps to hold people accountable and to bring people together," he said. "That is how it should be. That is their responsibility as a school district. So  the question I have is would any resolution from us help the situation."

The move to table the resolution essentially kills it.
