Racine Firefighters Approve a New Contract; Police Could be Next

Mar. 3, 2023 3p

From WGTD News:

Racine firefighters have ratified a new contract with the city, and Racine police officers could follow suit. According to the city, firefighters have agreed to a four-year contract that gives them a nearly 16% raise retroactive to Jan. 1, 2021. Other contract provisions include a $2,000 retention bonus, 320 hours of paid parental leave and another 3% pay increase for city residents. The contract is expected to be approved at Tuesday's city council meeting. A spokesman for the city says a ratification vote on a separate contract proposal has been scheduled for police officers. Although a controversial high-deductible health insurance plan remains in place, police officers and firefighters are expected to be abel to retire at a slightly earlier age with fewer years of service and still retain health insurance benefits until they're eligible for Medicare. The sweeter retirement benefits--recommended for approval by the city's Finance and Personnel Committee--are also expected to be considered at the council meeting.
