Racine Scholars Academy Given One Week Reprieve

Feb. 15, 2021 8:55p

(WGTD)---A charter school that would operate under the auspices of the Racine Unified School District was given a week to come up with a home for itself.

The Racine Scholars Academy is based on a rigorous college prep-styled curriculum that is geared toward the needs of minorities and low-income students. The school would be run by former Kenosha Unified principal Milt Thompson. Beverly Hicks, a retired RUSD teacher and former head of the Racine chapter of the NAACP, serves as president of the school.

Aided by an $800,000 planning grant from the state Department of Public Instruction, Academy leaders have been working for three years on a proposal.

They've been stymied by RUSD's insistence that no space exists for the school as the district has in motion a downsizing plan.

Monday night Thompson presented a couple of potential locations for the new school that only recently surfaced. The district would have to lease space for the school.

The board voted 6-2 to defer action on the matter until next week.

Racine Scholars is under the gun with an end-of-the-month deadline to present to DPI a draft agreement with the school district.
