The WGTD Radio Theater, now in its 14th season, presents the 116th live broadcast of this 12-time award winning series, showcasing the 91.1 Players in “The Kane Shadow: Sayonara, My Friends.”
On Saturday, October 6th, at 11:15 a.m., the WGTD Radio Theatre will present this mystery drama before a live audience at Lake Lawn Resort, in Delavan, Wisconsin. This show stars members of the 91.1 Players and “Orson Welles” as “The Kane Shadow,” is portrayed by Siegfried Christoph.
The Story: Lake Lawn Resort is celebrating its 140th anniversary this year. To mark the milestone, the resort is inviting guests to enjoy the property's storied heritage, scenic vistas, and timeless retreat character. One story concerning this history of the resort is seldom remembered, yet alone, talked about. It centers on previous resort owner Jay Reader, who, in 1943, sponsored Japanese-American Henry Tsuro, an accomplished chef to become the pastry chef at Lake Lawn Resort. Tsuro’s wife and children also joined him in Delavan.
Tsuro was one of hundreds of thousands of Japanese-Americans who were imprisoned in Japanese Internment Camps just after the Japanese attached Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Tsuro and his family were prisoners at the Minidoka Internment Camp, located in Hagerman, Idaho, halfway between Boise and Pocatello.
It was Executive Order 9066, which was a United States presidential executive order signed and issued during World War II by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 19, 1942. This order authorized the Secretary of War to prescribe certain areas as military zones, clearing the way for the incarceration of Japanese Americans, in U.S. internment camps.
Our hero, “Orson Welles,” as the Kane Shadow, sets out to solve the mystery of just what happened to the eight Japanese-American families and their future generations, both during World War II and afterwards. Orson does his usual thorough job of talking to many people in the Delavan area and also does his best to leave no stone unturned.
According to co-writer and co-executive producer Steve Brown, “What this true story shows is just how the citizens of Delavan, Wisconsin opened up their community and their hearts to these fellow American citizens, even though the U.S. Government, through Executive Order 9066, was locking up hundreds of thousands of children, women and men into these terrible barbed-wired internment camps around the country. Our long-running ‘Kane Shadow’ series approaches this important story with dignity along with historical accuracy.”
“The Kane Shadow: Sayonara, My Friends.” is written by Steven Brown and Michael Ullstrup, co-executive producers of The WGTD Radio Theater. The director of this broadcast is Rene Bushelle.
Stars from the 91.1 Players include: Julie Burton, Siegfried Christoph, Arthur Dexter, Viki DuMez, Brett Houdek, JaNelle Powers, Ann-Marie Schmid, Cameron Spencer, and Naomi Waisman-Zabler.
In addition to being aired over WGTD-FM, at 91.1 in Kenosha and Racine, 101.7 FM in Elkhorn, and 103.3 in Lake Geneva. The program will also be streamed live. on-line. at WGTD.org, and also on either an iPhone or Android “app” at WGTD FM.
