RUSD?: Shhhh! Altogether Now, Let's be Quiet!

Racine---After being told for years to do more with less, Racine Unified is being urged to build into its K-12 daily curriculum 30 minutes of, well, nothing.

Mandatory meditation--15 minutes or so both before and after class--would relieve stress for students and staff alike, and enhance teaching and learning, according to a group of proponents of the practice.

Several speakers went before the school board Monday night to make a pitch "There's been a lot of research showing that quiet time is a very effective tool in education," said Barry Uhlenhake, a case manager at Racine Vocational Ministry.

Businessman Bill Bueller agrees. "It's very effective in building resilience in the nervous system," he said. "And we all need that resilience with the stress and workload that we carry, and kids do as well."

The group got a non-committal response from Superintendent Lolli Haws, who said she'll direct someone in administration to gather more information.
