(WGTD)---It's not often that a global manufacturer dedicates a new plant in Kenosha then is in a position to look forward to celebrating the groundbreaking of another just a few miles away in the same year. But that appears to be the case for German-based Schutz Container Systems.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Monday at the company's new plant on 60th St. The facility makes plastic blue barrels and what are called "intermediate bulk containers", or IBC's for short. The company also recycles used containers. The $100 million plant currently employs 129 workers.

Monday's groundbreaking ceremony included comments from Schutz executives, Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. CEO Missy Hughes and Kenosha Mayor Dave Bogdala. "To have a company like this here and to choose Kenosha--you can build this anywhere in the world but you chose to be here in Kenosha and we can't thank you enough," he said.

Schutz builds on Kenosha legacy as a innovative manufacturing hub, he said.

Schutz has a presence on every continent and is the market leader in shipping containers, according to company officials. The Kenosha plant is its 14th in North America.

The company's 15th could very well be located to the north in the Kenosha Industrial Park.

Construction is expected to begin in the next few weeks on a plant to manufacture steel drums, according to Schutz CEO Roland Strassburger. Strassburger confirmed the timetable in a short interview with WGTD.

The second plant is expected to employ 165 workers.
