(WGTD)---With the pandemic seemingly waning, the only in-patient rehabilitation service for recovering COVID patients in Kenosha County has closed due to a lack of business.

The staff and administration at The Bay of Sheridan Health and Rehabilitation Center on south Sheridan Rd. in Kenosha celebrated the milestone last week as they were presented with a legislative commendation from two local state representatives, Tod Ohnstad and Tip McGuire.

From early summer to mid-February, the 24-bed unit served nearly 200 patients, most of whom had been released from area hospitals after receiving initial care, according to administrator Christie Leadley. "Most of them were here for therapy. They needed physical or occupational therapy because they were weak from COVID," Leadley said. "And then some had respiratory issues."

Most patients stayed between 15 and 20 days.

John Vander Meer, Director of Development for Champion Care, which operates the facility, said the center added staff for the completely segregated unit. "What The Bay of Sheridan Health and Rehabilitation Center was trying to do was to be effective partners to hospitals and health systems and to assure there was adequate capacity during the surge," he said.

The skilled nursing facility has 81 beds.
