Steam-Cleaning Gardens; Season-Opening Growing Tips Top Morning Show

Kenosha---We may prefer warmer springtime temperatures, but plants are just fine with the chilly weather, according to Gateway Technical College horticulturist Kate Jerome.

"When things explode they're going to go crazy," Jerome predicted on Monday's Morning Show.

Seasonal temperatures lead to less stress on plant life as the growing season progresses, she says. And the occasional temperature spike is not overly harmful because the biological clock of a plant is geared more toward hours of daylight than warmth.

In addition, temperatures have not been warm enough to prematurely hasten the blossoms on fruit trees---something that can lead to trouble if temperatures suddenly nose dive.

Gateway's Pike Creek Horticulture Center on the Kenosha campus is getting ready for two big events this week.

The weekly Urban Farm Market celebrates the opening of the season this Thursday afternoon from one to six. There'll be music, free range eggs and a free packet of seeds with a purchase.

On Saturday from 9-2, horticulture students will conduct a plant sale at the Horticulture Center.

Monday's Morning Show included commentary on a new way to weed. For testing purposes, the college recently acquired a device that blasts weeds with steam. Jerome says she's eager to see how it works.
