Steil Assesses Washington Without Trump; Looks Ahead

March 25, 2022 3:30p

(WGTD)---With former President Trump having cleared out of Washington, at least for the time being, conservatives have an easier time of spotlighting some of their proposals. That’s the view of 1st District Congressman Brian Steil, speaking at a constituent listening session in Sturtevant this week.

Steil was responding to a question from a man who identified himself as a Republican but not a Trump supporter. The man said he wished that the party would "unhitch" itself from the Trump wagon.

Steil, a Janesville Republican, indicated that his differences with Trump were over style and not policy. "I think Trump did some great policies," Steil said. "(But) he (Trump) doesn't talk like a guy from Wisconsin. I think that's one of the biggest challenges he faced. He's got a New York brash to him. I'm more of a Wisconsin guy."

Even though the ‘twitter sphere’ is still going strong, conservatives, Steil said, are in a better position to be heard. "I think we have an opportunity to go out and show conservative answers to some of the biggest challenges of the day. I think you're going to see a lot of voices in the mix now and in the years to come," he said.

Steil did not speculate on just who he thought his party’s next presidential nominee might be.

About 15 people attended Monday's listening session at iMET in Sturtevant.
