Virus: Another Record Day in Wisconsin; Parkside To Go Virtual After Break

(WPR/WGTD)---New reports of COVID-19 cases are at an all-time high in Wisconsin, based on the latest data published by the state Department of Health Services. 

DHS reported 7,777 new cases of the disease Friday, bringing the average for the past seven days to 6,442 daily cases. Both the new case total and seven-day average are the highest either figure has been since the beginning of the pandemic in Wisconsin, breaking records set just one day before. On Thursday, the state reported 7,497 new cases.

There were 58 new deaths from COVID-19 reported Friday. On Friday, 10,733 tested negative.

Assistant Department of Health Services Secretary Julie Willems Van Dijk told reporters Thursday that COVID-19 "is everywhere in our state. It is bad everywhere, and it's getting worse everywhere. It is straining hospitals, and people are dying."

Locally, the state reported four new deaths in Kenosha County, bringing the total to 106. Seven new deaths were reported in Racine County, bringing that county's total to 135. In Walworth County, two new deaths were registered, increasing the total there to 42.

The number of new cases in Kenosha County increased by 49. In Racine County, the daily total was 417 and in Walworth County the number was 152.

UW-Parkside announced Friday that all classes will be taught virtually from after Thanksgiving through the Winterim session, ending Jan. 29. Carthage previously announced that students should stay home after Thanksgiving to finish up the semester and take final exams remotely. 

Gateway Technical College announced this week that it too planned to move to a greater percentage of classes taught online.
