An apartment complex proposed for a site near Gateway Technical College in Kenosha got a preliminary review by the city’s Plan Commission Thursday. Gateway Lofts would consist of 42 apartments in a converted office building, and 28 additional units in four, stand-a-lone structures. The site is just east of 30th Ave. behind the Gateway Café. It's envisioned that the development would serve at least some students who attend the college. Gateway College President Bryan Albrecht spoke in support of the project, saying the complex would fill a gap. Gateway has no residential housing on any of its campuses. The only Plan Commission member who raised issues was Lydia Spottswood. She questioned the landscaping, the design of the main entrance and the look of a block of garages for tenants that would be visible from some nearby homes. The developer is expected to make a formal proposal in the coming months.

A gang-related dispute of some kind may have led to a shooting in June at a Kenosha apartment building. 23-year-old Matthew Turner was charged with attempted murder Thursday for shooting a man at a Kenosha apartment building near 39th Ave. and 45th St. The victim survived, despite being hit three times. The victim and Turner were once locked up together in the Kenosha County Jail. The victim claimed to have no clear idea of why Turner would want him dead, telling investigators that it could be because of—quote—“some old gang beef.”
