From WGTD Manager David Cole:
A quick note on the impact of the budget rescission votes in Washington.
While we don't receive federal funding, WGTD is expected to be indirectly impacted by cuts at Wisconsin Public Radio, our program provider.
Here is a statement from Jordan Siegler, Executive Director (interim), Division of Public Media, University of Wisconsin-Madison and Marta Bechtol, Executive Director, Educational Communications Board:
"Federal funding is an important part of PBS Wisconsin and Wisconsin Public Radio's revenue streams, as well as an important part of the national public media system. This funding ensures equity in reach of public media services for communities who don't have the capacity or means to fund operations through other revenue sources. Federal funding also creates efficiencies for the system in infrastructure, interconnection and music rights.
Here in Wisconsin federal funds comprise 10.4% of PBS Wisconsin and Wisconsin Public Radio's revenue. This rescission will have a significant effect on public media in Wisconsin and across the system, but we do not yet know the scope and specifics of those effects until we learn more about how the funding cuts will be implemented and what the impact will be on the larger public media system."
Beyond today's statement from WPR, you may already be aware of a previously-announced cut at WPR that involves the layoff of 15 staff members and the end of production of four programs that are heard primarily on the weekend.
WGTD's direct funding from Gateway Technical College and WPR has been stagnant for a number of years. We've been able to maintain programming and the operation through personnel cutbacks, tower rental and an increase in underwriting support. Engineering costs have been cut, thanks to technology advancements and a benevolent contract engineer. WGTD also benefits from a dedicated and talented staff and great support from WPR and Gateway administrators and staff. Lastly, we wouldn't still be around without the support of the community.
We encourage individuals to continue to support Wisconsin Public Radio. Non-profits and businesses in Kenosha, Racine and Walworth counties are asked to consider "advertising" on WGTD through the purchase of underwriting announcements. In addition, ad sales in our high school sports productions also support WGTD.
We encourage the community to take full advantage of what WGTD, WPR and NPR offer by exploring our websites.
