(WGTD)---Improvements will be made starting this fall to a 24-acre tract of land that was donated to Somers over a dozen years ago for use as a park.
The land—given by the Gitzlaff family-- is located off of County ‘E’ north of the Somers post office. It includes the Somers Branch of the Pike River.
Much of the initial work will focus on the waterway. The goal is to curb erosion, mitigate pollutants and reduce flooding.
The project will also add a trail system, boost diverse pollinator vegetation and improve the Oak Savanna.
Working in conjunction with the Village of Somers, the Root-Pike Watershed Initiative Network recently secured a $125,000 in grants from the Fund for Lake Michigan and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Future improvements in other area of the park are expected to include community gardens, an archery range and outdoor event space.
