Abortion Test in Racine Could be Coming Up in November

(WGTD)---A test of public sentiment on the abortion issue in Racine could be coming up this November.

Mayor Cory Mason and Alder Natalie Taft are proposing a referendum on whether the state’s 173-year-old anti-abortion law should be repealed.

The law bans abortion at any stage of pregnancy without exception for rape, incest or the health of the patient. The law does include an exception if the pregnant person’s life is in danger.

The ban was effectively nullified by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. With Roe v. Wade having recently been overturned by the court, the question is whether the old ban remains in place.

The Evers administration has gone to court to argue the ban is null and void.

The proposed referendum in Racine would ask voters whether the state law should be repealed outright.

The city’s Finance and Personnel Committee will consider scheduling the referendum during its regular meeting Monday night at 5:30.

The resolution, as written, would also put the city council on record in support of repeal.
