(WGTD)---Racine County has put out a three-page news release and has established a link on its website to serve as resources if Food Share benefits are discontinued because of the federal government shutdown.
The release warns that use of the QUEST debit cards that recipients use at grocery stores may be restricted beginning Nov. 1st, and that no new benefits will be issued until the shutdown ends.
About 15% of Racine County households receive Food Share benefits.
The leaders of Racine County Human Services, the Racine County Food Bank and United Way of Racine County say they will do what they can to mitigate problems that will result from the loss of benefits.
Racine County Human Services Director Hope Otto said the department is committed to making sure no Racine County resident goes hungry.
Racine County Food Bank Director Stephanie Sklba says her agency will work tirelessly to make sure there's enough food to bridge the gap.
Residents who want to help out are encouraged to donate to a food pantry, host a food drive or make a monetary contribution by going to the website of the United Way and clicking 'food insecurity from the drop-down menu under 'Designate my donation."
