Racine---A speeding car blew through the end of a T-intersection and smashed into a duplex early Saturday morning, sparking a fire and leaving a gaping, blackened hole. Injuries were minor.
"I thought it was a bomb," said Melissa Farr, who lives in the west side of the two-story duplex on Victory Ave. at Blaine Ave.
Luckily, no one was home on the east side where the crash occurred.
Neighbor Trudy Cudney ran up to the duplex in time to see the male driver stumble out of the wreckage. "He said my neck hurts."
With flames rising, the man then got a female passenger out. Neither appeared to be seriously injured, according to Cudney. Both were staggering.
Cudney said they looked to be in their 40s.
When he pulled up to the scene, owner Richard Becker said he thought for sure there were fatalities, but was relieved that no one was seriously hurt. "I can build another house," Becker said. "But I can't replace lives."
Becker's company owns dozes of rental properties in the area.
In Burlington Friday evening, a car estimated by a witness to be traveling at 100 mph crashed and flipped over on Pine St.
The driver, a 23 year-old Kenosha man, escaped serious injury, according to a news release from the Racine County Sheriff's Dept.
Upon hearing sirens, the man fled on foot through fields and a wooded area, but was captured about a-quarter of a mile away with the help of two police dogs, thermal night vision goggles and an ATV.
Charges include drunk driving, 2nd offense, and driving without a license.
