(WGTD)---The Kenosha Water Utility expects to replace hundreds of additional lead water line laterals this year.
Some 700 water lines in targeted low and moderate-income neighborhoods are expected to be replaced at no cost to the homeowner. The work is being financed by state grants.
A second program--available citywide--covers half the cost incurred by homeowners. To cover the other half, homeowners are able to obtain a low-interest loan.
The pipes that are being replaced are old lead lines that run from homes to the street. Exposure to lead can cause a variety of health problems, and is particularly harmful to children.
Water Utility General Manager Curt Czarnecki says about 2,500 laterals have already been replaced in the city, but another 7,000 remain. About one-thousand laterals were replaced last year alone.
