(WGTD)---The first in what may be a series of votes on a controversial proposal in Wind Point to expand the Shoop Golf Course located adjacent to the lighthouse was taken last week.
The village’s Plan Commission voted five to two against leasing land to the golf course developer for an expanded parking lot. The vote will go to the village board as a recommendation.
Village officials explained Thursday night that a ‘yes’ vote would prompt the developer to come up with a detailed site plan which would then be reviewed by the commission.
Before the Plan Commission vote on the leasing request, village resident Christie Kern argued that expanding the City of Racine-owned, nine-hole course and building a new club house would hurt the environment. "This winter it's been fabulous watching how many people came here for bird watching. There were very special birds that came here that haven't been here before," she said. "As we disrupt more and more of our environment and take down more trees we disrupt all of this."
Another resident told a reporter after the vote that he generally favors the proposed expansion, but is disturbed by the lack of detail.
The Keiser Group has a preliminary agreement with the city to make improvements in the course and operate it. They're proposing a 'dunes style', 12-hole course with a 70-car parking lot. The improvements, coupled with Lake Michigan views and the lighthouse itself, could turn the course into a regional golf destination.
