Double Fatality; Racine Council Vacancies; Busy Highways Reopen

Sept. 3, 2022 9:305a

From WGTD News:

A couple from the Racine area died in a motorcycle crash in Caledonia Friday evening. According to Caledonia police, the accident happened at the intersection of Douglas Ave. and 6 Mile Rd. when the 47-year-old operator of the motorcycle ran a red light and was struck by a car. The man's wife, who'd been a passenger on the bike, was pronounced dead at the scene while the man died later at the hospital. The Wisconsin State Patrol Traffic Reconstruction Unit is helping with the investigation.

A major thoroughfare in Pleasant Prairie has reopened following a several months-long reconstruction project. In order to facilitate improvements to the intersection at State Highways 32 and 165, officials elected earlier this summer to completely block off the intersection, cutting off the most direct route into and out of Illinois for many drivers. Officials at the time said the roads would reopen by Labor Day. The roadblocks were removed on Friday.

Four applicants have applied for a vacant seat on the Racine City Council, while no one has stepped forward to fill a second vacancy. The council is scheduled to meet Tuesday evening to interview the four applicants, then decide what to do about the other vacancy. The four applicants in the 11th district are former council member Mary Land, and Andrew Glass, Michael Hansen and Andrew Plocinski. The vacancy in the 11th was created by the resignation of CJ Rouse. The district covers a south-central section of the city. The district with no applicants is the 15th--a district last represented by Melissa Lemke, who also resigned. The district is comprised of northwest side neighborhoods. The deadline for applying for the vacancies was Thursday at 5 p.m.
