End in Sight for RUSD Modernization and Downsizing

Apr. 27, 2025 noon

(WGTD)---Most of the work authorized by the Racine Unified 2020 referendum is either completed or is underway or will be launched by the end of next year.

The initiative gave the district the green light to spend nearly a billion dollars to downsize and modernize district facilities. It passed by just five votes.

In recent developments, groundbreaking ceremonies were held earlier this month at Fratt Elementary and at Gifford K-8.

The $14 million Fratt project involves construction of a new STEAM lab, gym and library along with various security updates and infrastructure improvements.

The $17 million Gifford project includes classroom modernization, infrastructure improvements and construction of a new gym.

Monday night, the school board is expected to set the maximum price for improvements at Wadewitz Elementary and Case High School.

The roughly $35 million Case project involves the creation of new science, culinary, tech, lecture and fitness spaces along with various security updates and infrastructure improvements.

At Wadewitz, the plan calls for $23 million worth of improvements that includes a new gym and new art and STEM rooms.

Groundbreaking ceremonies for those projects are expected to be held next month.
