(WGTD)---A fundraiser has been launched for one of two workers who were attacked Friday at an animal shelter near Union Grove.
The worker is the lead volunteer at Tiny Hooves Sanctuary and is identified on a gofundme page by his first name, Taylor.
According to a post on the Tiny Hooves Facebook page by the group's founder, Beca Thompson, the incident began Friday morning when volunteers discovered an abandoned goat on the property. The animal was given shelter inside of a barn and the workers went about their daily chores.
A while later, a man drove up, hopped a fence, approached Taylor and angrily inquired about the whereabouts of the goat. The man struck Taylor with a large landscaping brick, and attacked a second volunteer who had come to Taylor's aid. The two workers, along with a third volunteer, locked themselves in a barn and waited for help.
A Racine County Sheriff's deputy arrived on scene and, according to a news release from the department, had his SUV rammed by the man, later identified as 32-year-old Bradley Kubisiak. The release says the deputy fired at Kubisiak, who then fled to a nearby property where a standoff occurred.
Kubisiak eventually took his own life by slashing his wrists and throat, according to the release.
Taylor was transferred to a Milwaukee hospital.
The organizer of the fundraiser says she's raising money to defray Taylor's expenses and ease the burden of caring for the Sanctuary's animals in his absence.
As of Sunday night, more than $26,000 of the $30,000 goal had been raised.
Online court records indicate that Kubisiak over the years had various run-ins with the law.
