Efforts by Caledonia police to corral a pair of runaway horses early Tuesday morning ended in a tragedy for one. It was struck by an Amtrak train just north of Franksville. Police said they were called to the area around 6 a.m. When the horses started running down the tracks, the Canadian Pacific railroad was called with an emergency request to stop train traffic. But it was too late for the engineer of a northbound Amtrak. He saw a police officer on the side of the tracks trying to flag him down, then saw two people running after the horses alongside the tracks. He was unable to stop in time and hit one of the horses. The horse had to be euthanized because of the extent of its injuries. The other horse was safely captured. The Amtrak train went on its way.
