Kenosha Wins Big Federal Grant to Extend Bike Trail

(WGTD)---A gap in the off-road bike trail between Milwaukee and Chicago will be partially filled thanks to a surprise $5.6 million federal grant to the City of Kenosha.

The grant will pay for the lion's share of extending the multi-use trail from 35th St. on the city's north side to past 52nd St. and into the Kenosha Innovation Neighborhood on the south.

The project includes construction of two trail bridges--one crossing Washington Rd. and the other over 52nd St.

According to city documents, the U.S. Dept. of Transportation notified the city earlier this year that the grant program had been eliminated with the federal government's restructuring. Just recently, however, city officials learned that the grant was back on track.

The city's share of the $7.3 million project is about $700,000. The amount is expected to be covered either through additional grants or the city's capital improvement program.

The Milwaukee to Chicago trail largely follows the abandoned right-of-way of the old North Shore interurban railroad.

On Kenosha's far south side, the off-road portion of the trail picks up at 30th Ave. and 89th St.
